NNL Retains Super Eight Playoff Format Despite Abolition Rumours

Abuja, Nigeria | September 18, 2025

The Nigerian National League (NNL) has not abolished the Super Eight playoffs, contrary to circulating claims.
The playoff system, which determines promotion of four clubs to the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL), remains in place. Eight teams from the league’s conferences and sub-groups qualify for the Super Eight at the end of each season, with the top four securing promotion.
Officials of the NNL have confirmed that the format was used in the recently concluded 2024/2025 season, where participating teams competed for promotion slots. No official statement has been issued by the NNL Board or the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to indicate that the playoff has been scrapped.
Reports suggesting the abolition of the Super Eight are therefore inaccurate, as the playoff system continues to serve as the established pathway for clubs aspiring to join the NPFL.
