Bauchi | July 31, 2025 — The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has intensified its push for hydrocarbon development in Northern Nigeria with the successful drilling of four new oil wells in Bauchi State.
This milestone is part of the ongoing Kolmani Integrated Oil Field project, aimed at unlocking the oil and gas potential of the Gongola Basin, which spans parts of Bauchi and Gombe States. The company confirmed that the wells, drilled over the last few months, have yielded promising preliminary results, signaling potential for commercial oil production in the region.
Speaking during an on-site inspection visit on Wednesday, NNPCL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, described the development as a significant boost to Nigeria’s quest for energy diversification and regional economic inclusion. He said the progress in Bauchi reflects the company’s strategic efforts to develop new oil frontiers beyond the Niger Delta.
“The drilling of these wells marks a turning point for oil exploration in Northern Nigeria. Our preliminary assessments are encouraging, and we are optimistic about scaling up development to full production,” Kyari stated.
He added that the Kolmani project is already attracting local and international investment interest, with ancillary infrastructure—such as access roads, logistics bases, and energy facilities—being developed to support the new operations.
The Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, who accompanied NNPCL officials during the inspection, expressed his administration’s full support for the project, citing the socio-economic benefits such as job creation, skills development, and infrastructure expansion for host communities.
The development comes amid the Federal Government’s renewed focus on regional resource development, especially in underexplored basins like Sokoto, Benue Trough, and Chad. The Bauchi drilling project is expected to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s oil reserves and strengthen energy security in the long term.
As part of the next phase, NNPCL will conduct extended well tests, environmental assessments, and community engagement programs before full-scale commercial production begins.
