Nollywood actress Nkechi Nweje has passed away after a brief illness.
The sad news was confirmed on Saturday by movie producer Stanley Ajemba, popularly known as Stanley Ontop, via his Instagram handle.
Ajemba paid tribute to Nweje, describing her as a vibrant actress and a dear friend. He also recalled their last conversation, which took place during the Queen’s saga, where she advised him to refrain from certain actions.
In his post, Ajemba wrote:
Nollywood is in tears as we lost one of our vibrant Nollywood actresses, @nkechi.nweje, after a brief illness.
Couldn’t post since morning because it was like a dream to me. Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha. Rest in peace, ma’am. My best friend, she always called me on the phone, advising me. The last time we spoke was during the Queen’s saga. She said, ‘Ontop, stop.’ I’m still speechless.
Veteran Nollywood actress Rita Edochie also mourned Nweje’s passing by posting a candlelight image with a dark background on Instagram, accompanied by the caption: This world is really not our home.
Another actor, Asa Ikuku, took to Instagram to announce the actress’s demise, writing:
Rest in peace, mummy Nkechi Nweje TV (Nwanyi Onisha). You are indeed a blessing to us. But God knows best. We will miss you so much, great Nollywood actress. Rest on, legend.
Nweje is survived by her husband, Dr. Azuibuike Nweje, and six children.
She was renowned for her compelling performances in Nollywood, particularly in motherly roles, and built a significant legacy in the Nigerian film industry.
Her passing is a great loss to Nollywood and the entertainment community at large.
