NPA Reaffirms Commitment to Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment.

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, has reiterated the agency’s unwavering dedication to promoting the rights and equality of women and girls. Speaking during the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration, themed “Accelerate Action for Gender Equality”, Dantsoho emphasized the NPA’s continued efforts to create opportunities for women to reach their full potential, both within and beyond the organization.

Highlighting the significance of IWD, Dantsoho stated that the NPA remains committed to not only participating in the celebrations but also fostering systems that prioritize women’s rights and empowerment in Nigeria. He stressed that the NPA places no limits on what women can achieve and has consistently supported gender equality initiatives in the ports sector.

The NPA’s longstanding dedication to women’s empowerment is evident in its notable achievements, including:

  • Extending maternity leave for women to six months.
  • Ensuring that pregnancy outside of wedlock does not hinder a woman’s career or access to entitlements.
  • Allowing nursing mothers flexible work schedules, enabling them to start work an hour later and close an hour earlier each day.
  • Appointing women to key leadership positions and integrating them into various operational units within the NPA.

Dr. Dantsoho emphasized that IWD is not just a symbolic occasion for the agency but an opportunity to reflect on progress and commit to further actions. He reaffirmed the NPA’s resolve to support women’s rights, promote gender equality, and empower women and girls to excel in all aspects of life.

International Women’s Day, observed globally on March 8, celebrates women’s achievements, underscores progress towards gender equality, and advocates for measures to eliminate gender-based violence and discrimination. Since its inception in 1911, the day has grown into a month-long commemoration widely recognized as Women’s History Month.

In line with its goals, the NPA remains steadfast in advancing gender equality through impactful policies and initiatives, ensuring a more equitable and inclusive future for all.
