Abuja, Nigeria | September 28, 2025
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced that passenger train operations on the
Abuja–Kadunacorridor will resume next week, following suspension of services after the derailment that occurred on August 26, 2025.
In a statement issued in Abuja, NRC confirmed that repairs on the affected section of the track have been substantially completed, with safety inspections currently underway.
The corporation added that while the main line has been restored, work is still ongoing on the secondary track.
NRC disclosed that 512 passengers have already been refunded, with arrangements in place to settle outstanding claims for other affected travelers.
Preliminary findings by the corporation attribute the derailment to human error, excessive speeding, and misapplication of the emergency brake system.
However, the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), which is conducting an independent inquiry, reported that 21 passengers sustained injuries, with no fatalities recorded.
The NRC also confirmed that staff retraining exercises are being conducted at Idu Station in preparation for the resumption of operations.
External investigations by the Federal Ministry of Transportation and NSIB are still ongoing.
