August 26, 2025 — The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that one of its Kaduna-bound AKTS trains derailed at about 11:09 a.m. on Monday at Kilometer 49, between Kubwa Station and Asham Station.
According to the corporation, emergency rescue teams, medical personnel, and nearby hospitals were immediately mobilised to provide support, while the full complement of security operatives has been deployed to the site to ensure the safety of passengers.
NRC further disclosed that efforts are underway to safely move all passengers back to Abuja, stressing that their well-being remains the corporation’s top priority.
Although no official figures have yet been released on casualties or injuries, eyewitnesses reported panic among passengers before security and emergency responders arrived at the scene.
The incident comes amid growing concerns about safety on Nigeria’s rail corridors, particularly the Abuja–Kaduna route, which has faced challenges in recent years. The NRC said investigations will be carried out to determine the cause of the derailment and prevent future occurrences.
