Abuja, June 23, 2025 — As the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) marks its 70th anniversary, the Federal Government has charged media professionals across the country to continue playing a vital role in defending democracy, promoting national unity, and fostering responsible civic engagement.
Speaking at a commemorative event held in Abuja to celebrate the milestone, government representatives commended the union for its decades of contribution to the growth of journalism and democratic governance in Nigeria. They emphasised the enduring importance of a free, fair, and responsible press in shaping public opinion and holding institutions accountable.
In a goodwill message, the Minister of Information and National Orientation described the media as the conscience of the nation and urged journalists to be guided by truth, accuracy, and objectivity in their reportage. He stressed that the current democratic era depends heavily on the media’s ability to inform, educate, and enlighten citizens constructively.
He also applauded the NUJ’s role in defending press freedom and standing against misinformation, fake news, and divisive narratives that threaten national cohesion.
While celebrating the achievements of the past, the Federal Government also challenged media stakeholders to embrace professionalism and innovation in the digital age, particularly in addressing the threats of disinformation and hate speech on social platforms.
NUJ President, in his remarks, reaffirmed the union’s commitment to upholding journalistic ethics and called for stronger protections for media practitioners, especially in volatile regions where journalists face intimidation and harassment.
The 70th anniversary celebration continues with a series of lectures, awards, and historical reflections, spotlighting the union’s journey from its founding in 1955 to becoming a central pillar in Nigeria’s democratic development.
