In a statement released on Monday in Lokoja by his Special Adviser on Media, Ismail Isah, Governor Ododo described the media as an indispensable pillar of democracy, playing a fundamental role in holding leaders accountable, amplifying citizens’ voices, and ensuring transparency in governance.

“For seventy years, the NUJ has been a formidable force in championing responsible journalism, upholding press freedom, and shaping public discourse in Nigeria,” the governor stated. “A free and independent press is the bedrock of a thriving democracy, and my administration remains committed to fostering an enabling environment where journalists can operate without fear or intimidation.”

He commended the resilience, dedication, and professionalism of Nigerian journalists who, despite numerous challenges, continue to provide credible and factual information to the public. He also emphasized the need for media practitioners to uphold the highest ethical standards, combat misinformation, and adapt to the evolving media landscape by leveraging technological advancements.

Governor Ododo reiterated his administration’s unwavering support for journalists in Kogi State, assuring them of a secure and conducive working environment that encourages press freedom. He urged media professionals to continue their noble duty of holding power to account while ensuring fairness, objectivity, and accuracy in their reportage.

“As we celebrate this historic milestone, I commend the leadership and members of the NUJ for their steadfast commitment to truth, accountability, and nation-building. I have no doubt that the union will continue to set high standards in journalism and contribute immensely to the progress of our great nation,” he added.

Governor Ododo also called for strengthened collaboration between the government and the media to promote responsible journalism, national unity, and socio-political development. He expressed confidence that the NUJ will continue to play a crucial role in fostering a free, independent, and responsible press that upholds democratic values.

He concluded by wishing the union continued success in its pursuit of excellence and professional integrity, assuring media practitioners of his government’s readiness to support initiatives that enhance the growth and development of the journalism profession in Nigeria.
