NYSC DG Urges Corps Members to Embark on Impactful Community Development Projects

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Dogara Ahmed, has advised corps members across the country to devote themselves to impactful Community Development Service (CDS) projects tailored to the pressing needs of their host communities.

Speaking during a routine visit to NYSC orientation camps in Anambra and Ebonyi States, the DG stressed that community development remains a core pillar of the NYSC scheme, designed to instil civic responsibility, patriotism, and a sense of nation-building among Nigerian youths. He urged corps members to view their service year as an opportunity to create lasting change at the grassroots level.

“Look around your host communities, identify their peculiar needs, and initiate projects that will add value. However, ensure you seek formal approval from the NYSC before executing any project,” Brigadier General Ahmed said. He emphasized that under no circumstance should corps members use their monthly allowances to fund projects, advising instead that they seek support through legitimate partnerships and community engagement.

He further highlighted the importance of safety and discipline throughout the service year. The Director-General strongly warned corps members against travelling at night or accepting free rides from strangers, stressing the need to prioritize personal security and adhere strictly to official guidelines, including traveling only with proper authorization and using recognized transport terminals.

“Your safety is paramount to us. Avoid unnecessary risks. Do not embark on night journeys and ensure your movements are cleared by NYSC officials,” he added.

General Ahmed also reminded the corps members that active participation in CDS is not only critical for community impact but is also a statutory requirement for earning the National Service Certificate at the end of their deployment.

The Director-General’s remarks come as the NYSC continues to reposition its activities to align with national development goals, particularly in health, education, rural infrastructure, and youth empowerment. His call reinforces the scheme’s enduring relevance in uniting Nigeria’s diverse population and grooming responsible future leaders.
