Oba Abimbola Owoade Crowned 46th Alaafin of Oyo as President Tinubu Calls for Support

In a grand ceremony held at Oliveth Baptist High School in Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade was formally crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. This significant event marked the beginning of a new era for the ancient city and the Yoruba kingdom, following the passing of the 45th Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, in April 2022.

The coronation was attended by a host of dignitaries, including Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams. President Bola Tinubu was represented by the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, who conveyed the President’s message of support and goodwill to the new monarch.

In his message, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of traditional institutions in fostering peace, promoting cultural identity, and supporting governance. He described the Alaafin’s stool as a symbol of cultural pride and unity, embodying the enduring legacy of one of Africa’s most powerful empires. Tinubu urged the people of Oyo to rally behind the new Alaafin, supporting his vision and upholding the values of peace, tolerance, and development.

Oba Owoade, who completed the traditional rites known as Oro Ipebi on March 29, was presented with the staff of office by Governor Makinde in January 2025. The coronation ceremony marked a significant moment for the Yoruba people, both at home and abroad, as it signifies a new chapter in the rich history of the Oyo empire.

The event was conducted under heightened security measures, reflecting the importance of maintaining peace and stability during such significant cultural events. As Oba Owoade begins his reign, he is expected to play a pivotal role in promoting unity and cultural heritage within the Yoruba kingdom and beyond.
