Obasanjo Acknowledges Buhari’s Efforts, Says He Gave His Best for Nigeria

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described the late President Muhammadu Buhari as a patriotic leader who, in his own capacity, gave his best in steering Nigeria towards development.

Obasanjo made the remark during a tribute following the passing of Buhari, noting that while opinions about his administration may vary, Buhari’s intentions for the nation were rooted in service and national growth.

“He was a patriot who tried his best for Nigeria,” Obasanjo said, acknowledging the efforts of the former leader in navigating the country through challenging periods.

According to Obasanjo, leadership is never without difficulties, and Buhari’s administration faced its share of complex issues. He maintained that despite criticisms, history would judge Buhari not only by his policies but by the sincerity with which he served.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, was known for his anti-corruption crusade and infrastructural development drive. His tenure, however, attracted mixed reactions over issues ranging from economic hardship to national security concerns.

Obasanjo concluded his remarks by urging Nigerians to reflect on the lessons of leadership and unity, calling on the present and future administrations to build on the foundations laid by previous leaders, including Buhari.

The late President’s funeral arrangements are currently ongoing, with tributes pouring in from across the country and beyond in honour of his legacy.
