Abeokuta, the vibrant capital of Ogun State, came alive last week as the long-awaited 22nd National Sports Festival finally kicked off in spectacular fashion at the MKO Abiola International Stadium. After months of postponement, the festival, branded the ‘Gateway Games 2024’, was officially opened with a colourful display celebrating Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, sporting talent, and unity.
The opening ceremony was a grand showcase of Nigerian artistry and tradition, drawing thousands of spectators who filled the stadium with energy and anticipation. One of the evening’s most electrifying moments came when internationally acclaimed Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, made a dynamic entrance that set the crowd roaring. His presence underscored the fusion of sports and entertainment that defines modern Nigerian events.
Adding a heartfelt and dignified tone to the proceedings was Asa, the soulful singer who performed stirring renditions of both the National Anthem and the Ogun State Anthem, capturing the spirit of the festival with grace and passion.
The formal opening was presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu. Dressed in a distinctive traditional outfit, Shettima officially declared the festival open, underscoring the federal government’s support for the event.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, as the host, warmly welcomed athletes and officials from across the country, emphasizing the significance of the festival as a platform for nurturing sporting excellence and fostering national cohesion.
Among the distinguished guests were Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, known for his charismatic presence and vibrant cultural representation, Senator Gbenga Daniel, and renowned artist Nike Davies-Okundaye, founder of the famous Nike Art Gallery, whose attendance highlighted the festival’s connection to Nigeria’s artistic heritage.
The crowd also gave a thunderous ovation to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who appeared resplendent in his bespoke traditional attire, symbolising a bridge between Nigeria’s past leadership and its promising future.
