Ogun Hajj Contingent Urged to Uphold Discipline and Represent Nigeria with Dignity

ABEOKUTA — As pilgrims from Ogun State prepare for the 2025 Hajj exercise in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the State Government has charged the contingent to exhibit good conduct, self-restraint, and discipline throughout the pilgrimage.

Addressing the pilgrims during a farewell ceremony in Abeokuta, government officials and religious leaders underscored the importance of maintaining decorum and adhering strictly to the rules and spiritual obligations of Hajj. They reminded the pilgrims that they are not only ambassadors of Ogun State but also representatives of Nigeria in the holy land.

Speaking on behalf of the state, a senior official from the Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board urged the contingent to avoid acts that could tarnish the image of the country, especially during interactions with other international pilgrims.

“You must demonstrate humility, patience, and self-control. Hajj is not just a religious obligation; it is a test of character and submission to Allah. Let your behaviour reflect the values of Islam and the dignity of Ogun State,” he said.

The board also warned against the possession of prohibited items, noting that Saudi Arabian authorities have zero tolerance for drug trafficking and other criminal infractions. Pilgrims were advised to adhere strictly to all immigration and health regulations, particularly those relating to vaccinations and prescribed medications.

In her remarks, a representative of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) commended Ogun State for its organisational structure and commitment to the welfare of pilgrims. She assured that the commission would continue working closely with state boards to ensure a smooth and spiritually rewarding Hajj for all Nigerian pilgrims.

This year’s Hajj marks the continued post-pandemic rebound of international pilgrimages, with Nigeria expected to send thousands of faithful to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah.

The first batch of Ogun pilgrims is scheduled to depart from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, in the coming days.
