Ogun I Customs Boss Pledges Seamless Trade Along Idiroko-Igolo Corridor

The Customs Area Controller of Ogun I Command, Comptroller James Ojo, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Customs Service’s commitment to facilitating seamless and legitimate trade along the Idiroko-Igolo corridor, a key trade route connecting Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ engagement held at the Idiroko Border Post, Comptroller Ojo emphasized the command’s readiness to strengthen cross-border trade through enhanced collaboration, professionalism, and adherence to international best practices. He assured traders, transporters, and business owners operating within the axis that the Customs Command is focused on fostering an environment that promotes lawful commerce without compromising national security or economic interest.

“We are prioritizing a balance between effective border security and trade facilitation. Our mission is clear — to ensure legitimate trade flows smoothly, without unnecessary delays, intimidation, or bureaucratic bottlenecks,” the Customs boss stated.

The Idiroko-Igolo corridor, historically significant for bilateral trade between Nigeria and Benin, has often been challenged by smuggling activities and informal trade practices. Comptroller Ojo acknowledged these challenges and reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to deploy intelligence-driven strategies, automate clearance procedures, and deepen cooperation with relevant border agencies to tackle inefficiencies.

He also pledged to maintain an open-door policy, encouraging feedback from stakeholders to identify and resolve issues in real-time. “We are not just enforcing laws; we are also building confidence in the trade system. A well-regulated border is good for our economy, our businesses, and our people,” he added.

The engagement witnessed the participation of freight forwarders, clearing agents, traditional leaders, and representatives of the business community, many of whom commended the Customs boss for his consultative approach and pledged their support to the new trade facilitation agenda.

With the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) gaining momentum, the Idiroko-Igolo corridor is expected to play an increasingly strategic role in cross-border commerce. Comptroller Ojo’s pledge signals a new era of collaboration and efficiency that stakeholders believe will contribute positively to Nigeria’s economic growth and regional integration goals.
