Ogun-Osun River Basin Advocates for Water Conservation.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA), Engr. Adedeji Ashiru, has called for an end to water wastage, emphasizing the need for sustainable water management.

Ashiru led a roadshow on Saturday in Abeokuta to raise awareness about responsible water use, marking the 2025 World Water Day with the theme “Glacier Preservation.”

The sensitization campaign covered key areas, including Camp, Gbonagun, Ake, and Kuto markets, where Ashiru highlighted the dangers of indiscriminate water usage and its impact on climate change.

Call for Water Conservation.
Addressing residents, Ashiru decried excessive water use, stating, “Some people use five buckets of water to bathe, while others leave the tap running while brushing their teeth or washing dishes. Leaking pipes go unfixed, leading to unnecessary waste.”

He warned that these practices contribute to climate change, irregular rainfall patterns, drought, and food shortages. “We are in March, yet the rains have not started, and we complain of excessive heat. This is directly linked to our poor water management,” he added.

Ashiru urged Nigerians to embrace responsible water usage and support conservation efforts to ensure sustainability.

OORBDA’s Commitment to Water Management.
Before launching the roadshow, Ashiru reiterated OORBDA’s commitment to sustainable water resource management, ensuring water remains available for drinking, agriculture, and other essential needs.

Speaking on this year’s World Water Day theme, “Glacier Preservation,” he explained the critical role of glaciers as nature’s water towers. He warned that global warming is accelerating glacier retreat, threatening water availability, increasing sea levels, and disrupting weather patterns.

“We must take proactive steps to safeguard our water resources for present and future generations. OORBDA is dedicated to sustainable development, and we urge policymakers, researchers, and civil society to collaborate in finding innovative solutions for water security,” Ashiru stated.

Solar-Powered Borehole Commissioned
As part of the event, OORBDA commissioned a solar-powered borehole at the palace of the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo.

Oba Gbadebo commended Ashiru’s leadership in ensuring efficient water management and joined the campaign for responsible water usage, urging Nigerians to avoid wasteful practices.
