Ogun State Government Pledges Revamp of Olumo Rock to Boost Tourism

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has pledged to transform Olumo Rock into Nigeria’s leading tourist destination through strategic government investment and revitalization efforts.

Speaking during an inspection of the Olumo Rock Tourist Centre in Abeokuta on Wednesday, Abiodun underscored the site’s deep cultural and historical significance to Egbaland, Ogun State, and Nigeria as a whole.

The governor projected that Olumo Rock would attract over 20,000 visitors in 2024, reinforcing its status as a key heritage and tourism asset for the state.

Abiodun emphasized that his administration is making tourism a priority, recognizing its potential as a major economic driver for sustainable development.

“We are now focusing on tourism as a critical sector for economic growth. Our goal is to fully harness its potential,” he stated.

“There are nations that thrive solely on tourism. Some have transitioned from oil dependence to generating 70% of their revenue from the tourism industry,” he added.

The governor highlighted Olumo Rock as Ogun’s most prominent tourist attraction, stressing the need for consistent investment in maintenance and promotion to sustain its appeal.

He cautioned that without proactive government intervention, such historic landmarks could deteriorate, losing both their cultural and economic value over time.

“I appreciate those who have been maintaining this site, but more needs to be done. From today, Olumo Rock will receive the attention it truly deserves,” Abiodun assured.

“I have observed several areas that need improvement, and we will immediately begin implementing upgrades to enhance the site and elevate its status as a world-class tourism destination,” he concluded.
