Ogun Teachers Set for Indefinite Strike as NUT Issues Directive

Public primary and secondary schools in Ogun State are set to shut down indefinitely following a circular issued by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), directing all its members to commence an indefinite strike beginning Monday, July 15, 2025.

The circular, which was widely circulated among school administrators and teaching staff over the weekend, cited unresolved issues between the teachers and the Ogun State Government. These include unpaid allowances, delay in promotion implementation, poor welfare packages, and inadequate teaching resources across schools in the state.

According to the NUT, several appeals and meetings with the government have failed to yield meaningful results, prompting the union to take decisive action to press home their demands.

A senior NUT official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated:

“We have exercised patience for far too long. The government continues to make promises without fulfilling them. This strike is to demand not just better pay, but respect for the teaching profession and the future of our children.”

Parents and guardians have expressed concern over the disruption the strike may cause, especially as students are preparing for promotional examinations and other academic activities.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Ministry of Education has yet to issue an official response as of press time. However, sources within the government indicate that efforts may be underway to initiate fresh dialogue with the teachers’ union in a bid to avert a prolonged shutdown of public schools.

With the strike set to begin tomorrow, all eyes are now on the state government to respond swiftly and prevent a deeper crisis in the education sector.
