Ogun Workers Suspend Strike Despite Unresolved Minimum Wage Dispute

News Report – July 23, 2025

The organized labour unions in Ogun State have officially called off their industrial strike action, even as key concerns over the implementation of the new minimum wage remain unresolved.

The decision to suspend the strike was reached after extensive deliberations between union leaders and state government representatives. According to the unions, while the government has yet to meet the core demand of implementing a revised minimum wage structure, assurances were given regarding continued dialogue and phased commitments to workers’ welfare.

The strike, which had paralyzed activities in various sectors including public schools, health facilities, and government offices, was initially declared over the government’s delay in adopting a living wage in line with federal recommendations and inflationary trends.

Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state, Comrade Hammed Benco, confirmed the suspension of the strike, urging workers to resume duties while negotiations continue. He emphasized that the union is prioritizing the well-being of workers but remains committed to pursuing a fair and sustainable wage.

The Ogun State Government, through the Head of Service, assured that it is not insensitive to workers’ demands and pledged to explore all financial and administrative means to address the issues raised, while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

Despite the suspension of the strike, labour leaders warned that failure to meet the agreed timelines and resolutions could result in another round of industrial action. They called on the state government to act swiftly in honoring its promises.
