Okpebholo Engages Security Chiefs Over Killings, Abductions in Edo

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to security as he convened a high-level meeting with security chiefs and key stakeholders to address the rising cases of killings and abductions in the state.

In a post on his verified X handle on Monday, Okpebholo emphasized that security remains a top priority for his government, stressing the need for proactive strategies to restore peace and ensure the safety of residents.

His statement comes amid ongoing protests in Ekpoma following the alleged killing of a suspected internet fraudster, commonly known as a “Yahoo boy,” by police officers last week.

Escalating Security Concerns
Edo State has witnessed a surge in violent incidents in recent weeks. In Ovia, clashes between farmers and suspected produce thieves have reportedly claimed 22 lives. Meanwhile, cases of kidnapping continue to rise, with the tragic killing of 21-year-old seminarian Peter Andrew of St. Peter Catholic Church, Ivukwa Community, Etsako East Local Government Area.

Andrew was abducted on March 3 alongside Rev. Fr. Peter Ekweli, who has since been released and reunited with the church.

Governor’s Security Strategy
Addressing the security situation, Governor Okpebholo stated that the meeting focused on implementing proactive measures to curb insecurity, restore order, and create an environment where citizens can live and work without fear.

“Earlier today, I convened a Security Council Meeting with security chiefs and key stakeholders to deliberate on strategies to enhance security across Edo State,” Okpebholo wrote.

“Our discussions centered on proactive measures to tackle security challenges, restore peace, and ensure that citizens can live, work, and conduct business without fear. Security remains a top priority on our administration’s agenda because where there is security, there is progress. We are committed to building a safer, more prosperous Edo for all.”

Ekpoma Protests Over Police Shooting
Meanwhile, protests in Ekpoma continued on Monday over the fatal shooting of a young man by police officers at a checkpoint.

A resident recounted that the deceased was stopped by police but attempted to flee the scene, prompting one of the officers to open fire, killing him. His brother, who was in the car with him, was subsequently arrested and taken to the state command headquarters in Benin.

“The young man, suspected to be involved in internet fraud, was stopped by the police but immediately ran from the scene. One of the officers shot him, leading to his death. His brother, who was in the car, was arrested and taken to the state command in Benin,” the resident explained.

Since the incident, members of the community have staged daily protests, calling for justice. On Monday, demonstrators attempted to mobilize students at Ambrose Alli University to join the protest, but the school was not in session.

As tensions rise, all eyes are on the Edo State government and security agencies to take decisive action in restoring calm and addressing public concerns over safety and law enforcement practices.
