Olubadan Declares Sarkin Sasa’s Title Void, Affirms Baale’s Authority Over Sasa Land

In a decisive move, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has officially declared the title of Sarkin Sasa in the Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State as null and void. The revered monarch also reaffirmed the authority of Chief Akinade Ajani Amusa as the Baale of Sasa, underscoring that any title or leadership contrary to this would not be recognised under the Ibadan Traditional Chieftaincy Law.

The declaration was made during an Olubadan-In-Council meeting convened on Monday at the Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, in Ibadan. The meeting addressed the ongoing controversy regarding the leadership structure in the Sasa community.

It was reported that, following the recent passing of the previous Sarkin Sasa, the traditional councils of the 17 Southern states, without seeking the Olubadan’s consent, nominated Ahmed Haruna (Ciroma) as the new Sarkin Sasa. This decision has since been contested, as it contradicts the established norms of Ibadanland’s traditional governance.

A statement released on Tuesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Olubadan, Gbenga Ayoade, reiterated that the title of Baale, currently held by Chief Akinade Ajani Amusa, remains the only recognised authority in Sasa land. According to the statement, “Any individual or group seeking to defy the Baale’s authority will face severe sanctions, as such disobedience is an affront to the Olubadan stool and the laws of Ibadanland.”

The Olubadan further emphasised that Chief Amusa, as the accredited representative of the Olubadan in Sasa, holds exclusive traditional and leadership powers in the region. The monarch also called on the people of Sasa to accord the Baale the respect and authority due to him, warning that failure to do so would result in serious repercussions.

This pronouncement has further solidified the Olubadan’s commitment to upholding the traditions and customs of Ibadanland, ensuring that the unity and stability of the community are preserved. The dispute over the Sarkin Sasa title is expected to fuel more discussions about the administration of traditional leadership in Oyo State.
