The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa Olukoyede, has called on Nigerian students to confront the menace of internet fraud with the same determination and seriousness as efforts to combat cultism on campuses.
Addressing a recent gathering of university students, Olukoyede stressed that internet fraud, commonly known as “Yahoo Yahoo,” poses significant risks not only to individuals but also to Nigeria’s reputation and economic stability. He urged students to be proactive in resisting and reporting fraudulent activities within their communities.
“Just as we have collectively worked hard to reduce cultism and its devastating effects on our campuses, so too must we tackle internet fraud with equal commitment. This crime undermines our society and the future of our youth,” Olukoyede said.
He further emphasized the EFCC’s readiness to collaborate with educational institutions to raise awareness, educate young people on the consequences of cybercrime, and promote ethical use of technology.
Olukoyede’s charge is a timely reminder of the urgent need for all stakeholders, especially the youth, to play an active role in curbing the rising trend of internet fraud in Nigeria.
