The Ogun State Muslim Council (OMC) is deeply saddened by the passing of Alayeluwa Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, and President-General of Ogun State Muslim Council who departed this life on Sunday 13th July,2025 at the ripe age of 91. The monarch’s demise has sent shockwaves throughout the community,and the nation and the OMC pays tribute to his remarkable life and legacy.
The Legendary
Oba Adetona’s 65-year reign was marked by wisdom, faithfulness, and unwavering commitment to his people. He was a unifying force, bringing together people from all walks of life and fostering a sense of unity, cooperation, and collaboration. His leadership was characterized by vision, integrity, and a deep understanding of the needs of his subjects.
He professed and practised Islam till death. A Champion of Interfaith Harmony and allowed all faiths to co-exist.
The late monarch was a strong advocate for interfaith harmony and cooperation. He worked to promote understanding and peaceful coexistence between different religious groups, and his efforts earned him widespread respect and admiration. He made the hosting of the 12th National Qur’anic Recitation Competition, which Ogun State hosted in 1997 possible. He was a mobilizer of resources.
Oba Adetona’s legacy extends beyond his traditional and religious leadership. He was a catalyst for development in Ijebuland, initiating numerous projects that improved the lives of his people. His commitment to education, healthcare, economy, and infrastructure development transformed the Ijebuland, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of his subjects.
The late monarch’s contributions to the development of Ijebuland and the nation earned him the national honor of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON). This prestigious presidential award is a testament to his selfless service and dedication to the nation as the longest serving traditional ruler in the country and one of the most respected monarchs in all of Africa.
The OMC notes that the passing of Oba Adetona poses a challenge of finding a worthy successor who can build on the foundation laid by the late monarch. The Council prays for guidance and wisdom for the Ijebuland as it navigates this transition.
The OMC extends its deepest condolences to the royal family, the people of Ijebuland, the entire community, and the Zonal OMC.. May the soul of the late monarch rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire future generations.
