Ondo Students Set for Mass Protest Over Neglect, Welfare Concerns –

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Committee, Ondo Axis, has declared its intention to embark on a statewide protest on Thursday, March 27, 2025, citing the Ondo State Government’s failure to address critical student welfare issues and the worsening state of tertiary education in the state.

In a statement signed by NANS Ondo Chairman, Oluwarotimi Joshua, and the Deputy Coordinator of NANS South West Zone D, Naheem Ademola, the student body expressed frustration over the government’s continued neglect despite repeated engagements and peaceful appeals.

According to the statement, the protest is aimed at drawing attention to the deplorable conditions of tertiary institutions, the absence of student-friendly policies, and the security challenges faced by students, particularly those undergoing the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).

“Our demands are simple and legitimate. We have written letters, engaged in dialogue, and made appeals, yet the government continues to ignore our concerns. Enough is enough! The government must take immediate action,” the statement read.

Key Demands of NANS
Among the demands highlighted by the students’ body are:

Implementation of student-centered policies to improve learning conditions.

Renovation and upgrade of school facilities across tertiary institutions.

Construction and rehabilitation of hostels to ease student accommodation issues.

Improved security measures for students, especially those in SIWES programs.

Provision of student buses as earlier promised by the state government.

Support for student entrepreneurship and skill acquisition programs to empower youths.

Justice for the attack on NANS members in Ogbese, which remains unresolved.

Inclusion of student representatives in educational policy-making.

NANS further urged all students in the state to turn out en masse for the protest, stressing that it would be a peaceful demonstration but firm in holding the government accountable.

“We will not be silent while our education system continues to decay. The power of students must not be undermined. We demand the quality education and welfare we deserve,” the statement concluded.

The planned demonstration is expected to disrupt normal activities within academic institutions in the state, as students prepare to take their grievances to the government’s doorstep.
