Operation Whirlwind Strikes Smugglers, Auctions Seized PMS at Subsidized Rate

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), under its ongoing anti-smuggling initiative Operation Whirlwind, has recorded a significant breakthrough with the interception of large volumes of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) allegedly being smuggled out of the country.

The strategic operation, launched to curb the illegal exportation of petroleum products, was carried out in collaboration with security agencies across Nigeria’s border corridors. According to a statement by the NCS, several trucks and jerry cans loaded with PMS were seized during surveillance and coordinated raids in border communities notorious for fuel smuggling activities.

Speaking on the development, the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Comptroller Essien Etop Andrew, revealed that the seized products have been subjected to accelerated disposal through public auction at subsidised rates.

“In line with the directive of the Federal Government and the Comptroller-General of Customs, the intercepted PMS is being auctioned directly to residents of affected communities at a government-approved subsidised price to alleviate hardship and discourage support for smuggling,” he said.

The auctions, which began over the weekend, have been met with appreciation by local residents, many of whom had struggled with fuel scarcity and inflated prices caused by illegal bunkering and diversion of PMS.

Comptroller Andrew reaffirmed the Service’s zero tolerance for smuggling and warned that those involved in the illicit trade would be prosecuted. He also emphasised that Operation Whirlwind would be intensified across the six geopolitical zones to dismantle smuggling networks and protect Nigeria’s economic interests.

The Nigeria Customs Service continues to call on the public to support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities that threaten national revenue and security.
