July 5, 2025 – Ikeja, Lagos State
The Office of Political Literacy and Civic Engagement (OPL&CE) has intensified its grassroots voter education efforts by launching a voter advocacy campaign in Ikeja Local Government Area.
The initiative, aimed at increasing political awareness, voter participation, and civic responsibility among residents, was held at the Ikeja Council Secretariat. The event brought together community leaders, youth groups, market women, and local government officials in a shared call for active democratic engagement.
Speaking during the outreach, the Director of OPL&CE, Mrs. Folasade Onanuga, emphasized the importance of informed voting and active participation in governance. She urged citizens to see elections not just as a right, but as a civic duty that can shape their future.
“This campaign is part of a broader strategy to combat voter apathy and misinformation ahead of future elections. When citizens understand the power of their vote, they become more involved in shaping governance outcomes,” she stated.
The session featured voter sensitization on the electoral process, use of the BVAS machine, the importance of obtaining and safeguarding Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and the need to reject vote-buying and electoral violence.
Participants commended the initiative, noting that such advocacy is crucial in promoting transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s democratic system. The OPL&CE pledged to continue its voter engagement programmes across all local government areas in Lagos State in the coming months.
