Over 3.7 Million Facing Food Crisis in North-East Nigeria – ICRC Warns

July 22, 2025

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has raised a grave alarm over worsening food insecurity in North-East Nigeria, revealing that more than 3.7 million people are currently struggling to access sufficient food due to ongoing conflict and instability in the region.

In a recent statement, the humanitarian organization emphasized that communities across Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe States are experiencing extreme hunger, with many families surviving on just one meal a day or going without food entirely. The ICRC attributed the crisis to prolonged armed conflict, displacement, disrupted farming activities, and limited humanitarian access.

“People are trapped in a cycle of violence and hunger,” the ICRC warned. “Years of armed conflict have destroyed livelihoods and forced millions to flee their homes. Many communities are unable to plant crops or access markets safely.”

The report also noted a rising number of malnourished children, as well as increased demand for food aid and medical assistance, especially in remote areas where humanitarian intervention remains difficult due to security risks.

The ICRC called on the government, development partners, and international donors to intensify efforts in addressing the root causes of the crisis and to scale up emergency food assistance to prevent further deterioration.

As Nigeria continues to combat insecurity in the North-East, the situation underscores the urgent need for long-term peace-building, agricultural rehabilitation, and targeted nutritional support to restore stability and save lives.
