The Oyo State Government has approved a ₦4.5 billion financial assistance package for victims of the January 16, 2024, Bodija explosion. The decision was reached during the State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at the Executive Chambers of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.
This new round of funding is aimed at supporting the rehabilitation and resettlement of survivors whose lives and properties were severely impacted by the tragic incident. The explosion, which rocked the highbrow Bodija area of Ibadan, was reportedly caused by illegal storage of explosive materials, leading to multiple fatalities, injuries, and widespread property damage.
According to the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the ₦4.5 billion package is in addition to over ₦200 million already expended by the state government in the immediate aftermath of the explosion. That initial emergency intervention covered hospital bills, temporary accommodation, feeding, and security operations at the blast site.
As part of long-term recovery efforts, the government also approved recommendations to revoke land titles of two properties located off Adeyi Avenue—the epicentre of the explosion. A memorial monument will be constructed on the site in honour of those who lost their lives and to serve as a reminder of the need for vigilance against unsafe practices.
Furthermore, property owners in the affected area have been granted permission to rebuild their homes based on the advice and clearance of government-appointed structural engineers. The state also constituted a 10-man committee to oversee the disbursement of funds, mediate family disputes among beneficiaries, and ensure transparency in the entire process.
Prince Oyelade emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to holding accountable those responsible for the tragedy. He noted that several suspects have already been arraigned in court, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend others still at large.
The relief package marks a significant move by the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde to demonstrate compassion, justice, and accountability in the face of one of the state’s most devastating disasters in recent memory.
