The Oyo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to potable water through sustained collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
Speaking in Ibadan during an event marking this year’s World Water Day, the agency’s chairman, Babalola Afobaje, emphasized the vital role of water in public health, environmental sustainability, and economic development. He noted that since assuming office in 2019, Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration has made significant investments in water infrastructure and resource management to enhance access across the state.
Afobaje emphasized the crucial role of water in public health, environmental sustainability, and economic development. He noted that Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration has invested significantly in water infrastructure and resource management since 2019, enhancing access to clean water across the state.
According to Afobaje, the state government will continue to collaborate with stakeholders to expand access to potable water, enhance climate-resilient infrastructure, and strengthen policies ensuring a water-secure future.
Reflecting on this year’s World Water Day theme, “Glacier Preservation,” Afobaje highlighted the importance of protecting glaciers, which regulate the global water cycle, support biodiversity, and sustain human livelihoods. Although Nigeria lacks glaciers, their melting has far-reaching consequences, including rising sea levels, coastal flooding, and freshwater shortages.
Afobaje cited the United Nations Environment Programme, stating that glaciers store nearly 70% of the world’s freshwater supply, and their loss poses a severe threat to water security, food production, and ecosystem stability.
World Water Day, celebrated annually on March 22, aims to raise awareness about the global water crisis and promote achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6: ensuring water and sanitation for all by 2030
