Party Registration Surges to 134 as INEC Extends CVR in Anambra

Abuja, July 18, 2025 —
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that it has received a total of 134 applications from groups seeking registration as political parties in Nigeria.

This disclosure comes as the Commission announced the extension of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Anambra State. The extension is aimed at accommodating the high turnout of prospective voters ahead of the state’s upcoming governorship election.

According to INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, the extension became necessary due to the surge in voter registration requests and the need to ensure all eligible citizens are given the opportunity to register.

“We have recorded a massive influx of applications from political associations aspiring to become registered parties. At the moment, 134 such applications are under consideration. This reflects the increasing interest in political participation across the country,” Olumekun stated.

On the CVR exercise, he affirmed that INEC had deployed additional registration machines and personnel across Anambra to address the rising demand and minimize waiting time for registrants.

Anambra’s governorship election is scheduled for November 2025, and the state has seen a marked increase in political mobilization and civic engagement. The extension of the CVR exercise is expected to further boost voter turnout and participation in the democratic process.

INEC urged political stakeholders and eligible voters to take full advantage of the window and ensure they are properly registered, while also reaffirming its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections.
