The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to take immediate action to safeguard the lives and property of residents, emphasizing that his failure to do so undermines his constitutional responsibility. This call comes in the wake of a disturbing wave of violent attacks across the state, which the party believes has spiraled out of control.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the state director of media and publicity, Mr. Leye Igbabo, the PDP expressed its deep concern over the growing insecurity in Ondo, particularly the alleged relentless killings by armed assailants. Igbabo pointed out that the victims of these attacks were merely going about their daily activities, struggling to make ends meet, when they were ambushed and killed by the gunmen.
The PDP made it clear that it was baffled by the prolonged inability of the state government to curb these acts of violence. According to the party, it is inexplicable how such incidents could continue without any form of resistance from the authorities, particularly when there is a state government in place. Igbabo argued that Governor Aiyedatiwa has clearly failed in his constitutional duty, as outlined in Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), to protect the lives and property of citizens.
The statement further highlighted the alarming scale of the violence, noting that within the span of less than a month, nearly 50 people have been killed in various communities across the state. Igbabo decried the lack of arrests or prosecutions following these killings, a situation that has raised questions about the competence of the state government in addressing the crisis.
The PDP official lamented the continued and unprovoked attacks, labeling the absence of action as a clear indication of the government’s helplessness, as well as a potential compromise within the corridors of power in Ondo State. He warned that the current state of insecurity points to a deeper issue of governance failure, leaving residents to feel abandoned and vulnerable.
In conclusion, Igbabo urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene urgently, stressing that the state government appears incapacitated in effectively tackling the rising tide of violence. He called for a swift and decisive response from the federal government to address the worsening security situation in Ondo State, which has left many citizens in fear for their lives.
