PETROAN Confirms Talks with Federal Government Over Proposed Nationwide Shutdowns

Abuja, Nigeria | September 8, 2025

The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has confirmed that it is in discussions with the Federal Government following threats of a possible nationwide shutdown of filling stations across the country.

Speaking on Monday, PETROAN President, Dr. Billy Gillis-Harry, said the association is engaging relevant authorities to resolve lingering issues affecting petroleum marketers, including rising operational costs, supply bottlenecks, and challenges linked to the pricing framework.

He stressed that the dialogue was crucial to avert a crisis that could disrupt fuel distribution nationwide. “We are committed to ensuring uninterrupted supply of petroleum products, but our members face unbearable costs that need urgent government intervention. We have opened talks with the Federal Government and hope for a quick resolution,” Gillis-Harry stated.

The development comes amid mounting tensions in the downstream oil sector, with unions including the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and other stakeholders also raising concerns over fuel supply, logistics, and subsidy-related disputes.

Industry watchers warn that if talks fail, the proposed shutdowns could trigger fuel scarcity, worsen inflationary pressures, and further strain Nigerians already grappling with high pump prices and cost-of-living challenges.
