The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) to activate the “Petroleum Products Passport” platform nationwide. This move is aimed at improving the security and accountability of petroleum products from depots to retail outlets. The Petroleum Products Passport is a document that contains detailed information about the origin, quality, and specifications of petroleum products being traded.
Dr. Billy Gillis-Harry, National President of PETROAN, emphasized that activating this platform would ensure that every product lifted by tankers is utilized and accounted for. He highlighted the benefits of this technology, including the protection of tankers and products, ensuring they are safely delivered to fuel stations without being hijacked or smuggled.
Gillis-Harry also urged the NNPC Ltd. to think innovatively and increase domestic crude oil production to meet the needs of local refineries. He stressed the importance of transparency and communication within the NNPC, advocating for regular updates on its operations to build public trust.
This initiative comes as part of broader efforts to address challenges in Nigeria’s petroleum sector, including the recent allegations by PETROAN that some local refineries are importing substandard crude oil to cut costs. The association has called for stricter quality controls on imported crude to ensure compliance with global standards.
By activating the Petroleum Products Passport, NNPC can enhance the integrity of the supply chain, reduce losses due to theft or diversion, and improve overall efficiency in the distribution of petroleum products across Nigeria.
