Pharmacists Reject Claims Linking Fluoride to Cancer

Pharmacists in Nigeria have strongly dismissed claims suggesting a link between fluoride and cancer, calling such allegations baseless and unsupported by scientific evidence. The assertions, which have gained traction on social media and other platforms, have sparked concern among some members of the public regarding the safety of fluoride in drinking water and dental products.

In a joint statement, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) and the Nigerian Association of Pharmacists in Academia (NAPA) emphasized that fluoride, when used appropriately, poses no known risk to human health, including cancer. The groups clarified that numerous scientific studies and expert reviews have consistently found fluoride to be safe and effective in preventing tooth decay.

The controversy surrounding fluoride has resurfaced following circulating reports that link the substance to cancer. However, experts have pointed out that these claims are based on misinterpretations or distortion of scientific research. According to the pharmacists, fluoride levels in drinking water and dental care products are strictly regulated by health authorities and are well within safe limits.

Dr. Moses Akinola, a member of the PSN, explained that the inclusion of fluoride in dental care is a globally accepted practice aimed at reducing dental cavities and promoting oral health. He added that over the years, fluoride has played a key role in improving dental health, particularly in children, without any credible evidence suggesting that it poses a cancer risk.

“Fluoride has been extensively studied and is endorsed by reputable health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Dental Association (ADA), as safe for use in drinking water and oral care products,” Dr. Akinola said.

The pharmacists also called for the public to rely on information from trusted scientific sources and to disregard sensationalized claims not supported by peer-reviewed research. They further advised individuals to consult with qualified healthcare providers for any concerns regarding the use of fluoride.

This dismissal follows similar statements from health experts globally who have reaffirmed the safety of fluoride, reinforcing that the benefits of fluoride in oral health far outweigh any unfounded risks. In light of ongoing misinformation, health professionals have stressed the importance of public education on the science behind fluoride usage.

The pharmacists’ stance is expected to reassure many Nigerians who may have been concerned about the safety of fluoride and encourage them to continue benefiting from its proven advantages in maintaining good dental hygiene.
