Pilgrims Converge at Masjid Al-Namirah Ahead of the Annual Hajj Sermon

In the early hours of this sacred day, waves of pilgrims are steadily gathering at Masjid Al-Namirah in the plain of Arafah, one of Islam’s most revered historical and spiritual landmarks. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation as the faithful, dressed in simple white garments symbolising unity and humility, prepare to listen to the annual Hajj Khutbah—one of the key highlights of the pilgrimage.

The located on the edge of Arafah, holds deep religious significance. It is believed to be the site where Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) delivered his Farewell Sermon during his final pilgrimage more than 1,400 years ago. Today, the tradition continues, with the Hajj Khutbah being broadcast live to millions around the world. Delivered shortly before the combined Dhuhr and Asr prayers, the sermon sets the tone for the Day of Arafah, reminding believers of the values of justice, equality, piety, and submission to Allah.

Security and logistical arrangements have been carefully implemented by Saudi authorities to manage the massive influx of people. Temporary shading, water distribution points, and medical stations are all in place to ensure the safety and comfort of the pilgrims under the intense summer heat. The Khutbah, delivered in Arabic with simultaneous translations into various languages, including Hausa, Yoruba, and English, is aimed at reaching the diverse body of worshippers from across the globe, including the thousands of Nigerians present in this year’s pilgrimage.

Masjid Al-Namirah itself is uniquely positioned, with part of it situated within Arafah and the other part outside. Pilgrims traditionally wait for the sermon and then move fully into Arafah for the standing (Wuquf)—a critical act that defines the Hajj. Islamic scholars unanimously agree that the standing at Arafah is the pinnacle of the pilgrimage. Without it, the Hajj is considered incomplete.

As the sermon draws near, the unity and spiritual intensity at Masjid Al-Namirah are palpable. For the Hujjaj, this is more than a religious gathering; it is a historic moment that connects them to the legacy of the Prophet and offers a rare opportunity for introspection, renewal, and a deepened relationship with the Divine.
