Education Minister Warns: Unapproved Satellite Campuses to Face Strict Sanctions

The Federal Minister of Education has raised serious concerns over the proliferation of unapproved satellite campuses across Nigeria, warning that institutions operating without proper accreditation will face stern government sanctions.

Speaking at a recent stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, the minister emphasized the critical need to uphold academic standards and protect the integrity of Nigeria’s higher education system. “We will not tolerate the operation of satellite campuses that lack approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) or other relevant regulatory bodies,” the minister declared.

The warning comes amid increasing reports of universities and polytechnics establishing satellite campuses in various parts of the country without meeting the minimum requirements set by the regulatory authorities. Such unauthorized establishments have raised fears about compromised quality of education and exploitation of unsuspecting students.

The minister assured that the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the NUC and other agencies, is intensifying surveillance and enforcement efforts to identify and shut down illegal campuses. Institutions found guilty risk losing their licenses, facing hefty fines, and possible legal action.

Parents and students were urged to exercise caution and verify the accreditation status of any institution or campus before enrollment. The ministry reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all Nigerian higher education institutions meet global standards to produce graduates equipped to compete internationally.

The clampdown on unapproved satellite campuses aligns with broader reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s educational system and promoting quality assurance in the sector.
