The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a 32-year-old ex-convict, identified as John Doe, for attempting to rob motorists during peak traffic hours along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway. The arrest occurred on Tuesday evening following a distress call from commuters stuck in traffic.
According to the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adekunle Ajisebutu, the suspect was apprehended by officers from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) who were patrolling the area. “Upon receiving the distress call, our men swiftly moved to the scene and arrested the suspect while he was attempting to rob a motorist at knifepoint,” Ajisebutu stated.
Preliminary investigations revealed that John Doe had previously served a two-year sentence for a similar offense and was released from the Kirikiri Correctional Facility six months ago. The suspect confessed to targeting motorists during traffic jams, exploiting the slow movement of vehicles to carry out his crimes.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, commended the RRS officers for their prompt response and reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users. He urged motorists to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
The suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon the completion of the investigation.
