Police, Civil Defence Clash in Ebonyi Leaves Policeman Dead

Abakaliki, August 28, 2025 — A violent clash between operatives of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has left one policeman dead in Amaeze community, Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Eyewitnesses said the confrontation, which occurred late Wednesday, began as a minor disagreement but escalated into an exchange of gunfire, causing panic among residents of the area. The identity of the deceased officer has not yet been released by the authorities.

Confirming the incident, the Ebonyi State Police Command described the development as “unfortunate,” assuring that an investigation had commenced to unravel the cause of the clash and bring those responsible to justice. Similarly, NSCDC authorities in the state noted that a joint panel would be set up to investigate the matter.

Residents of Amaeze have expressed fear over the incident, urging security agencies to prioritize professionalism and collaboration instead of rivalry that could endanger the lives of civilians and officers alike.

The federal government is expected to intervene as calls grow for stricter coordination between security agencies to prevent further breakdowns in inter-agency relations.
