The Ondo State Police Command has firmly debunked reports alleging that a vehicle in the convoy of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was involved in the tragic death of a young girl in Akure. According to the Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, and the command’s spokesperson, Olusola Ayanlade, thorough investigations and eyewitness accounts have confirmed that the incident was caused by a hit-and-run driver operating an unregistered white Lexus vehicle, not by any vehicle associated with the First Lady’s entourage.
The incident occurred in the Oba Ile area of Akure shortly after the First Lady’s convoy had already passed. Eyewitnesses, including individuals at the scene and the parents of the deceased, corroborated that the reckless driver, who was not part of the presidential convoy, struck the seven-year-old girl and immediately fled the scene. One witness reportedly pursued the fleeing vehicle on a motorcycle in an attempt to apprehend the driver.
The Police Commissioner personally visited the grieving family to ensure a transparent investigation and reiterated that at no point was the First Lady’s convoy involved in the accident. The command has called on the public to disregard misleading reports and urged anyone with useful information about the hit-and-run driver to come forward to aid ongoing efforts to bring the perpetrator to justice. The police also extended their condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed their commitment to upholding truth and accountability in the state.
