Police, CSOs Agree on Peaceful Protest, Single Venue in Lagos

In a bid to ensure orderliness during this year’s June 12 Democracy Day activities, the Lagos State Police Command and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have reached an agreement to hold all protest-related events at a single designated venue.

The consensus was reached during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Lagos on Tuesday, attended by police representatives, leaders of various CSOs, and human rights advocates.

According to Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the decision to centralize protest activities aims to protect public safety while respecting citizens’ right to peaceful assembly.

“We have agreed with protest organizers that all rallies will be held at Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota. This arrangement is to avoid a breakdown of law and order and ensure the safety of all Lagosians,” Hundeyin said.

He noted that the police will provide adequate security at the venue, while also monitoring other parts of the city to forestall any form of disruption.

Civil society groups welcomed the decision, emphasizing their commitment to a peaceful demonstration commemorating the sacrifices made for democracy on June 12, 1993.

The groups are expected to use the platform to voice concerns on governance, insecurity, and economic hardship, while calling for reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
