Abuja, July 1, 2025 — The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has dismissed widespread claims suggesting that officers sealed off the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja on Monday.
The clarification followed reports that heavy police presence at the Wadata Plaza headquarters disrupted scheduled meetings of the party’s Board of Trustees and National Executive Committee (NEC). Eyewitnesses had initially alleged that security operatives had blocked the entrance to the premises, fueling speculation of a forceful intervention in the party’s internal affairs.
However, in a statement issued on Monday afternoon, the FCT Police Command spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, described the reports as “false and misleading.” She explained that the deployment of officers was solely to ensure peace and prevent any breakdown of law and order amid tensions over conflicting PDP leadership activities.
“The Nigeria Police did not seal the PDP national secretariat,” Adeh stated. “Our presence was merely precautionary, aimed at preventing a possible confrontation between rival party factions.”
The PDP had earlier announced a NEC meeting slated for Monday, June 30, to address urgent issues within the party, including the leadership dispute and preparations for upcoming off-cycle elections. But internal disagreements over the legality and timing of the meeting led to rising tensions, prompting the security alert.
Party members and supporters had begun converging at the headquarters early Monday morning, with some alleging that they were initially denied access. However, access was later granted to authorised personnel, and the secretariat remained operational throughout the day.
As at press time, party officials continued closed-door deliberations to resolve internal disputes, even as observers cautioned that the ongoing crisis could affect the PDP’s political fortunes ahead of the 2026 general elections.
