Police Oversight Body Cautions Against Misuse of Tactical Squads, Assigns Commissioners

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has issued a strong warning to state police commands regarding the overreliance and potential abuse of Tactical Units, urging them to prioritize the functionality of established police departments, particularly at state headquarters.

The commission expressed concern that some state commissioners have allowed these Tactical Units to overshadow and undermine the effectiveness of core police departments, even those led by Deputy Commissioners of Police.

During an interactive session with newly appointed commissioners of police, recommended by the Inspector General of Police for deployment to various state commands, the PSC emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity and operational capacity of existing police structures.

The PSC also announced the following commissioner assignments:

Ibrahim Maikaba (Kano State) to Zamfara State
Breret Simon (Plateau State) to Taraba State
Christopher Emmanuel (Niger State) to Yobe State
Olusegun Omosayin (Ondo State) to Cross River State
Adamu Elleman (Jigawa State) to Niger State
Sani Aliyu (Kogi State) to Bauchi Command
Bello Shehu (Gombe State) to Katsina Command
Saka Ajao (Ogun State) to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command
Ojo Adekimi (Ekiti State) to Kwara Command
The PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (retd.), advised the newly appointed commissioners to ensure that Tactical Units operate within their designated roles and do not encroach upon the responsibilities of recognized police departments. He highlighted the potential for abuse of power within these units and stressed the importance of collaboration with Deputy Commissioners overseeing established departments.

Furthermore, DIG Lakanu urged the officers to foster positive relationships with their subordinates and build trust within their communities, including youth, traditional leaders, and professional organizations. He cautioned against the establishment of unnecessary squads.
