In a determined push against the rising tide of kidnapping and banditry across the country, the Nigeria Police Force has successfully rescued 31 victims in two separate operations carried out in Taraba and Edo States. The operations, which were executed by police tactical units and supported by local security networks, form part of an intensified effort to restore public confidence and ensure safety along volatile highways and remote communities.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the development in an official statement released on Friday. According to him, the operations reflect the Nigeria Police’s resolve to confront criminal gangs threatening the security of lives and property across various parts of the country.
In Edo State, the police recorded a breakthrough on Friday, July 11, 2025, when operatives of the state command responded swiftly to a distress alert following an ambush along the Fugar-Agenebode Road in Etsako East Local Government Area. The attack, suspected to have been carried out by armed kidnappers, resulted in the unfortunate death of two persons, while several others were abducted during the violent incident.
Prompt action was taken as a joint team of police operatives and local security operatives launched a search-and-rescue mission. The effort led them to the Obe Hill axis, near the Ajaokuta corridor, where they encountered the kidnappers. Following a fierce exchange of gunfire, the criminals were forced to abandon their captives and flee into the forest with gunshot wounds. Fourteen victims were successfully rescued during the operation, and no casualties were recorded among the security personnel. The police have since intensified efforts to track down the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.
In a similar development in Taraba State, the police rescued another 17 victims who had been abducted along the Wukari highway. The incident occurred on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at around 11:45 p.m., shortly after a white Toyota bus conveying passengers from Enugu to Yola, Adamawa State, was intercepted by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers. The attack happened not far from the Federal University Wukari, a known flashpoint for such criminal activities.
Upon receiving the distress call, a combined team of police operatives and other security agencies immediately mobilised to the scene. The kidnappers, sensing the advancing security presence, abandoned all 17 victims and escaped into the nearby forest. All passengers were rescued unhurt, and a manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the suspects.
Reacting to the success of both operations, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, lauded the courage and professionalism of the officers involved. He stated that the successful rescue missions are a testament to the police force’s renewed dedication to safeguarding Nigerians and dismantling criminal networks nationwide.
The IGP further assured citizens that the Nigeria Police Force will continue to intensify its operations, with a focus on intelligence-led policing, community collaboration, and swift tactical responses. He urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure the collective fight against insecurity yields lasting results.
