Lagos, July 9, 2025
The Lagos State Police Command has announced a total restriction of vehicular movement across the state on Saturday, July 12, 2025, as part of security measures for the upcoming local government elections.
According to an official statement released on Wednesday by the Command, the restriction will take effect from 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on election day, covering the entire state.
The decision, the police said, is aimed at ensuring a safe and peaceful environment for voters, election officials, and other stakeholders during the voting exercise.
“This is a standard security procedure to guarantee public order and enable the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to conduct a hitch-free local government election across all local council areas,” the statement read.
While the restriction affects all forms of vehicular movement, the police clarified that essential service providers, electoral officials, and accredited observers and journalists will be exempted, provided they carry valid identification and proper accreditation.
Residents were urged to comply fully with the restriction and conduct themselves peacefully. The police also warned against any form of electoral violence or disruption of the process, vowing to arrest and prosecute anyone found violating electoral laws or the restriction order.
The local government election is expected to determine new leadership across the 20 local government areas (LGAs) and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs) of Lagos State. The outcome is seen as a critical barometer ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Security agencies across the state have been placed on high alert to forestall any threat to peace before, during, and after the polls.
