Police Restrict Movement, Deploy Personnel for Anambra Bye-Elections

Awka, Anambra State | August 16, 2025

The Anambra State Police Command has announced the deployment of personnel and operational assets to identified flashpoints and sensitive areas ahead of today’s bye-elections in Anambra South Senatorial District and Onitsha North I State Constituency.

In a statement on Saturday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the security reinforcement was designed to guarantee a hitch-free, peaceful, and credible electoral process.

“As part of the build-up to the forthcoming bye-elections, massive deployment of personnel and operational assets is currently ongoing across identified flashpoints and other sensitive areas to ensure adequate security coverage before, during, and after the election,” Ikenga said.

The police also announced a restriction of movement between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. in affected areas and warned that vigilante and quasi-security groups are barred from participating in election duties. Only accredited security personnel are permitted to be involved in the exercise.

Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Godwin Eze, has been assigned as the supervisory officer for election security in Anambra State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed that it has concluded logistics and stakeholder engagements, assuring that voting materials have been distributed for the polls.

Residents have been urged to comply with security directives and report any emergencies through established police hotlines.
