In a significant development, the Ogun State Police Command has launched extensive security operations around the Sagamu Interchange on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway following numerous reports of armed robbery attacks and killings in the vicinity.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ms. Omolola Odutola, revealed in a statement issued in Abeokuta yesterday that law enforcement officers conducted a thorough two-hour security assessment of the entire interchange area to evaluate the situation firsthand.
This heightened security response comes in the wake of alarming social media reports documenting an incident on March 21, 2025, where an individual returning from a night vigil was violently attacked under the bridge and subsequently succumbed to injuries sustained during the assault.
Despite the absence of a formal complaint regarding this specific attack, the Commissioner of Police for Ogun State, Mr. Lanre Ogunlowo, promptly ordered a comprehensive security operation in the area. During their meticulous assessment, police personnel discovered unauthorized trading activities and identified a criminal hideout concealed in the surrounding vegetation. Three suspects were apprehended during the operation.
To effectively combat these criminal elements, the police command has strategically deployed personnel from the Quick Response Squad, OP Mesa, and Mobile Police Squadron 71 at critical locations including the underside of the bridge, roundabouts, and key intersections serving as entry and exit points to the interchange.
“As part of our immediate response measures, we have disbanded all illegal trading activities under the interchange bridge,” Ms. Odutola stated. “The Commissioner of Police has also engaged with transport union representatives to redirect traffic toward well-illuminated and secure areas to prevent future incidents.”
Although Ogun State maintains a relatively peaceful profile, the command has urged residents and travelers to exercise vigilance and avoid locations known for criminal activities. Law enforcement officials have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all road users and commuters along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
With the successful discovery of the criminal hideout and the arrest of several suspects, security agencies have pledged to maintain a robust presence in the area to deter any further criminal activities and ensure public safety.
