Prominent political activist Dr. Usman Bugaje has raised alarms about the future of Nigeria’s democracy, warning that the system could collapse if public confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) continues to be undermined.
Speaking on the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s electoral process, Dr. Bugaje emphasized the need for reforms to strengthen INEC’s independence, particularly in relation to the presidential appointment of its chairman.
“The credibility of the electoral body is fundamental to the survival of our democracy.
If it continues to be compromised, the consequences for Nigeria’s democratic system could be dire,” Dr. Bugaje stated.
Civil society organizations and political analysts have previously echoed concerns over irregularities in past elections, citing issues such as delayed results, allegations of bias, and incidents of vote manipulation.
These factors have contributed to public distrust in the electoral process.
Dr. Bugaje called for immediate reforms to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s elections and restore confidence in democratic institutions, stressing that transparent and independent electoral processes are essential for the nation’s stability.
