Abuja, Nigeria — August 15, 2025 | The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has handed the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum, warning of an indefinite nationwide strike if unresolved demands are not met.
Following its National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, the union accused the government of failing to honour agreements from previous negotiations. These include payment of outstanding salary arrears, completion of the renegotiated salary structure, increased funding for polytechnics, and clearance of pending promotion cases.
ASUP President, Anderson Ezeibe, said the union had exercised patience for years but could no longer endure what it called the government’s “deliberate neglect” of the technical education sector. He added that the ultimatum was a last resort to avert the collapse of polytechnic education in Nigeria.
The union warned that failure to act within the given timeframe would force a total shutdown of all polytechnics nationwide, disrupting academic calendars and examinations. The Federal Government is yet to officially respond to the threat.
