The Presidency has responded to claims by Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, that democracy has collapsed in Nigeria.

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, addressed Obi’s remarks after a video surfaced showing the former Anambra governor condemning Nigeria’s current state of governance.
Reacting to Obi’s statement, the Tinubu administration dismissed the claims and warned against spreading narratives that could undermine the country’s democratic institutions. The presidency reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democracy and addressing national challenges through governance and reforms.

Obi’s Criticism of Nigeria’s Leadership
Speaking at a colloquium in Abuja on Monday, March 24, 2025, organized to celebrate the 60th birthday of former Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, Obi asserted that Nigeria’s democracy had collapsed due to the caliber of leaders governing the country.
