Kaduna, Nigeria — August 16, 2025
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday conducted supplementary by-elections across seven constituencies in Kaduna State, but the exercise was overshadowed by low voter turnout in several polling centres.
In Chikun Local Government Area, particularly in Sabon-Tasha, Narayi, and Maraban Rido wards, many polling units were deserted for much of the morning and early afternoon, despite the early arrival of electoral officials and voting materials.
Multiple security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), maintained a visible presence around polling stations, ensuring the exercise remained calm and orderly.
The elections were held to fill vacancies in state and federal constituencies across Chikun, Igabi, Kaduna South, Kudan, Kachia, Kagarko, and Kauru local councils. According to INEC, a total of 1,114 polling units were activated, with over 639,000 Permanent Voter Card holders eligible to participate.
While Chikun recorded poor turnout, Kaduna South witnessed a relatively higher number of voters. However, the exercise in parts of Makera, Barnanwa, and Kakuri/Gora wards was tainted by allegations of vote-buying, with reports that party agents offered between ₦10,000 and ₦15,000 per voter. The Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) also experienced minor technical glitches in the early hours but was quickly restored.
The election concluded peacefully with no major incidents of violence reported.
