President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new wave of appointments to the governing councils of several federal institutions, including universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country. The appointments are part of the administration’s strategic efforts to strengthen leadership and improve the overall performance of Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
Among the institutions affected are the African Aviation and Aerospace University in Abuja, the University of Jos in Plateau State, and other key educational establishments. The newly appointed council members are expected to provide policy direction, institutional oversight, and leadership support to ensure the effective management of these schools in line with national development goals.
In a related move, the President has also reconstituted the governing councils of three major universities — the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (NAU). The action follows the earlier dissolution of UNIABUJA’s council in February 2025 due to administrative controversies and calls for leadership reform.
According to official statements, the appointments were made based on merit, experience, and a demonstrated commitment to public service. The Federal Ministry of Education has been directed to ensure a smooth transition and immediate inauguration of the new appointees to enable them hit the ground running.
These decisions underscore President Tinubu’s commitment to reforming the education sector and ensuring that Nigeria’s institutions are governed with transparency, efficiency, and accountability. The newly appointed members are expected to play critical roles in shaping policy, improving academic standards, and promoting good governance in their respective institutions.
